All bets are off because no matter how much he tries to get away from her...he's hooked and can't, no doesn't want to be released.

Autumn Mayburn is a southern woman through and through. She came to West Bend two years ago, with her baby girl, Olivia to start a new life. Being hurt by her ex, Autumn doesn't trust or need a man. For the sake of her daughter, she can't deviate from her structured life. However, all of that changes when she meets the insatiable, sexy, young Luke Saint. The attraction is immediate which makes her heart tell her to take a chance, while her head is screaming NO!

In this climactic plot against the mining company, along with the breathless relations of this couple, Luke and Autumn's story left me feeling satisfied to the max. I enjoy the way Sabrina Paige relays her characters' plights while creating a familiar world that we all can relate with. Exquisitely crafted, Sabrina!

There are many things about this story that made it a book I liked, but there are also things that made me wish it to be over quickly. I never was completely blown away. It was easy to put down. One of the confusing things was the age of Luke. Ms. Paige tells us he's 24...but I had just finished reading Elias & Silas' stories before this.. (they're twin brothers of Luke)...and in those stories we're told they're 24 as well. So either Luke had a different Mom... or Luke, Elias and Silas were triplets....or Luke is at least 10 months older. I dunno and I kept flailing around in the deep end of the pool trying to get a grasp on his age...which kept me from getting engrossed into the plot. And the toddler, Olivia. First we're told she's one year old...but if Autumn has been in West Bend for two years, arriving when she just discovered she's pregnant...then her daughter (Olivia) has to be at least 15 months at the onset of this story. But the epilogue says that after 6 months goes by, Olivia is now 2 years old....so I'm thinking the second scenario is correct. But by then the book is over and because of this timeline being off, I missed the full thrust and involvement of the story and never connected.

I loved Autumn Mayburn (heheh..love that name.."Autumn May Burn"). In the beginning of the story we're told she has "fiery red hair"...but later in the story her hair changes to "auburn". Her brilliant green eyes stays consistent however. Anyway, Auburn Mayburn is a 34 y/o divorcee' with a toddler daughter. They've relocated to West Bend, Colorado from Kentucky. Autumn is defensive because of her cheating ex and a little bit uptight. Even though she's a self-assured business woman who's never spontaneous (sets her goals and sticks to her plan)...she's also insecure with trusting men. She's lost her confidence in trusting her judgement. She doesn't have a strong self-image, therefore she doesn't always believe a compliment to be genuine. And if there's one person who irritates her and gets on her last nerve, it's cocky, walkin' with a strut and smiling at her like she's "in the bag", Luke Saint.

He has icy blue eyes, a charming smile and a reputation as a player. He's confident, arrogant and sexy and knows how to use his charm. He's never had to work to make a woman succumb to him....until Autumn. Luke Saint (24) isn't a relationship kind'a guy. He doesn't date and certainly doesn't hook-up with "mom's". Yet he's strongly attracted to Autumn and for the life of him he can't figure out why he keeps flirting with her. At first he thinks it's because she's challenging...or maybe it's because he likes the reaction he causes...getting her angry. She lights up like a bottle rocket when she's angry and she intrigues him. But....she's older....with a child....and is completely wrong for him. So he fights his attraction to her. Luke is slowly working through the damage he's carried since his childhood...growing up with an abusive, drunken father and a mother who didn't care.

This story can stand on its own but you'd get a better grasp on the whole cast of characters by reading the first two books....Elias (West Bend Saints Book 1) and Silas (West Bend Saints Book 2). It's a long cat and mouse chase with lots of great, hawt, sexy scenes among a little bit of weak drama. The author keeps reiterating facts that were already established in books #1 and #2. I can understand a refresher course of events....but it played and replayed throughout the trilogy and after awhile I didn't care WHAT was going on. The dramatic slow progression of the corruption unfolding in West Bend (that was also in the first two books).. became so drawn out that I wondered if it was going to conclude. Or maybe go into a fourth book. But by the second to the last chapter of this book, Ka-BAM...it was over. In all three books, the drama was the same...ie; suspicious characters...suspicious deaths...suspicious Company forcing people to sell their homes, etc. And then....over with our two protagonists achieving their HEA.
The day her father died, Autumn went to her husband's office to tell him that and also that she was pregnant and walked in on him doing his secretary. She left immediately and called her lawyer to get a divorce and never looked back. Then she just started driving to clear her mind and ran out of gas near an apple orchard for sale in West bend. She bought it, moved in, and began producing hard cider, and selling it commercially. It would have all been lost if Luke Saint, a volunteer firefighter hadn't drove by and noticed the orchard was on fire and called it in and went to work putting it out. It was caused by a drunk foreman who passed out with a lit cigarette. She and Luke had an attraction to each other from the git go but he was a player and she was ten years older than him with a kid. The more they fight their attraction to each other the stronger it gets. Luke hated West Bend and left a long time ago. His father was a mean drunk who beat him, his brothers and their mother all the time. Luke was a smoke jumper who thrived on adrenaline. The only reason he was back in town was that his father were dead and his mother's death was ruled a suicide and he wasn't buying it. Valuable minerals had been discovered in the area and a mining company was buying up all the land they could and there were rumors that bad things happened to those who didn't sell. Would he figure out what was going on, and could they have a happy ever after in spite of their age difference and the fact she had a two year old daughter?
