Midnight Secretary, Volume 1, is a Josei manga (made for older teens/adults) vampire romance from Tomu Ohmi. This series was very popular and it was great to see another Josei title from Viz (a good companion to the zany fun of Butterfly and Flowers by Yuki Yoshihara).

The story follows a prim OL (Office Lady) with drive to do the best job possible but saddled with a very young face. She ends up with an assignment to a playboy CEO, son of the Chairman of a large company, who turns out to be a vampire. Hence, the title Midnight Secretary since she will spend her nights working for him, rather than her days.

The series has some great arcs, with a lot of different conflicts brought in to keep the story interesting. At 7 volumes, it's a great length with a decently plotted storyline and a strong ending. I greatly enjoyed reading this in Japanese and the Viz translation was very well done.

As with most Josei manga, more mature characters (typically 18-25 years old) as well as themes are explored. The male character is a playboy and not your typical noble pure hero - something understood in Japanese mores but a bit more mystifying to Americans, perhaps. Certainly, your usual alpha male and a woman with the smarts enough to keep him in check as well as deal with his issues from being a supernatural. As well, being a secretary is considering an excellent profession for women while in Western cultures it might not have as exalted a status.

This first volume gives a great introduction to the series feel and really gives a good idea as to the more mature themes found in Josei titles.

The artwork is rather old school and does take a bit to get used to - and certainly there is a lot of sexual situations in Josei manga. But once you start reading, you get used to the illustration style and it feels natural.
